Hello
My name is Arianna Pacifico and I am a third year elementary school art educator working in Jackson County, GA. I graduated from the University of Georgia in 2021, and I am currently pursuing my masters degree in Art Education at Kennesaw State University. This website is part of my capstone project that I have been researching and gathering sources for over the past several months.
Why Agency?
As a new art educator in the South, I have become increasingly aware of how polarizing political topics and social issues have been in the field of education. I have consistently felt the desire to teach social justice concepts to my students, but worried about creating controversy. This is where I asked myself, "How can I inspire my students to care about the world around them through advocacy?" I believe that many young learners have the desire to be involved with the world around them through various forms of social activism, but may not always know how to make their voices heard. Students, even at the elementary school age, can become involved with making a positive change within their community through learning how to have agency. Art educators are in a unique position where we can help tap into the creativity of our students and allow them to imagine alternate realities and challenge oppressive institutions. This website serves as a resource for other elementary level art educators who feel passionate about including social justice in their classroom, but may not know where to begin. Teaching agency is the key for helping our students understand that their opinions matter, and that they can make a difference.
